[New Release] Secrets of Successful Small and Strong Companies and More
◆The Secret of Successful Small Giants= The survival rate of startup companies in South Korea after three years is only 51%. The survival rate drops below 30% by the fifth year. Because of this, the third year after founding is called the "Death Valley." Here, we introduce 20 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that have overcome this Death Valley and continue to grow steadily. These are true small giants that have persevered in harsh environments and pioneered new markets. We interviewed 20 CEOs of these small giants to hear their survival strategies and philosophies of success. The reason the authors focus on SMEs is that they are the backbone of our national economy and the workplace for the people. There are 7.71 million SMEs in South Korea, accounting for 99.9% of all companies. The number of people working in SMEs is 18.5 million, which is 80% of all employees. The authors emphasize that these 20 small giants share common traits: they prioritize rational management focusing on profit and substance rather than simply expanding size, and they choose and concentrate on what they do best. ◆Catalonia Song= This is a reportage published in 1938 by British novelist George Orwell, famous for "Animal Farm" and "1984." Orwell participated in the Spanish Civil War that broke out in 1936 and depicted what he saw and felt with literary flair, making it a masterpiece of reportage literature. Orwell fought as a volunteer soldier with POUM (Partido Obrero de Unificaci?n Marxista, Marxist Unified Workers' Party) during the Spanish Civil War. He romantically portrays life and battles with his fellow volunteer soldiers on the front lines. This work is useful for deepening understanding of the Spanish Civil War and Orwell's political orientation. It includes a commentary by historian Professor Lim Ji-hyun and Orwell's essays written after returning home, titled "Leaking the Secrets of Spain" and "Memorial Poem for Italian Volunteers."
