Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Welcomes New Year with Hope-filled K-Classic
Featuring Lee Seung-won, Shin Chang-yong, Samuel Yoon, and others
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will hold a New Year's concert at 7 p.m. on the 9th at the Concert Hall of the Seoul Arts Center. Musicians representing K-Classic will perform in harmony with orchestras composed of the KBS Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, and the orchestras of Gwacheon, Gwangju, Gimcheon, Bucheon, Suwon, Ulsan, Wonju, Incheon, Jeonju, and Jeju.
The opening will be led by Seungwon Lee, principal deputy conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in the United States. He will present the 4th movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor, "Fate." Pianist Changyong Shin, who became the first Korean to win the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in 2018, will perform Chopin's "Grande Polonaise Brillante" in E-flat major, Op. 22.
The following stage will be dedicated to vocal music. Bass-baritone Samuel Yoon, who gained attention at the 2012 Bayreuth Festival for his role in "The Flying Dutchman," will sing "La calunnia ? un venticello" from Rossini's opera "The Barber of Seville." Soprano Hyesang Park, the first Asian soprano to sign an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon in 2020, will perform "I Could Have Danced All Night" from the musical "My Fair Lady." Baritone Junmo Yang, winner of the German Aarden Competition and active at the Dresden Semperoper, will present "Toreador Song" from the opera "Carmen."
The orchestra will also perform K-Drama OSTs such as from "Extraordinary Attorney Woo" and K-Pop songs including Red Velvet's "Feel My Rhythm." The finale will be adorned with pieces conveying the joys and sorrows of life, including singer Jinseop Byun's "Our Love Needs It," poet Sowol Kim's poem "Unforgettable," "I Am the Master of This Street" from Rossini's "The Barber of Seville," and poet Gilja Song's "Spring Comes Across the River."

The performance will be broadcast live on the Seoul Arts Center's YouTube, Naver TV, Digital Stage, and KBS Plus. It will also be streamed live at cultural centers and media centers in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Gangwon (Arirang Cine Center, Gangnam Healing Center Gaepo, Dong-gu Video Media Center, Gimpo Nonghyup Regional Cultural Welfare Center, Gohan Cinema, Kangwon National University Library, and Suncheon Culture and Arts Center).
