Sixteen additional deaths were reported in Wajima City and Anamizu on the same day. As a result, the death toll by area was tallied as 69 in Wajima City, 23 in Suzu City, 8 in Anamizu, and 5 in Nanao City.
This is the first time in eight years since the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, which claimed 276 lives, that earthquake deaths have exceeded 100. The number of casualties is expected to rise further. The number of residents reported as "missing" according to Ishikawa Prefecture stands at 211.
Although 72 hours?the so-called "golden time" for life-saving rescue?have passed since the earthquake, Japanese authorities are making every effort in rescue operations. Wajima City has received about 100 reports of people trapped under buildings. Rain is forecast in Wajima City from this day through the 7th, prompting the Self-Defense Forces and police to expedite searches for missing persons.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida emphasized to related ministries during an emergency meeting that morning, "Please devote all efforts to rescue operations to save as many lives as possible."
Due to this earthquake, approximately 66,000 households in 14 basic municipalities of Ishikawa Prefecture are experiencing water outages, and 27,000 households are without electricity. More than 30,000 people are living in about 370 evacuation centers.
