Yeosu City Launches Steering Committee for Municipal Art Museum Construction
Composed of 15 Experts from Various Fields Nationwide
Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) announced on the afternoon of the 4th that it has launched the City Art Museum Construction Promotion Committee and has begun full-scale efforts to build the city art museum.
The ‘Yeosu City Art Museum Construction Promotion Committee’ is chaired by Vice Mayor Kim Jong-gi and consists of a total of 15 members, including 12 experts in art, exhibition management, and architecture selected through nationwide public recruitment and recommendations. The committee will be active for two years until 2025.
The committee will provide consultation and review on overall matters related to the direction of the museum construction, design, service and construction, exhibition and spatial planning, exhibition construction, as well as preparation for the museum’s opening and operation.
At the meeting held in the reception room on the 7th floor of GS Caltex Yeulmaru, the city held an appointment ceremony and shared the committee’s operation and the current status of the Yeosu City Art Museum construction with the members.
At this event, Vice Mayor Kim Jong-gi said, “The city art museum, a long-cherished wish of the citizens, is being promoted with the goal of meticulous planning and operation from the initial construction stage so that it can become a landmark facility of Namdo art,” and added, “I hope the committee members representing each field will actively express their opinions.”
Meanwhile, the site for the Yeosu City Art Museum was confirmed in 2020 within Mangma Park at Yeulmaru, and after passing the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s final feasibility review for establishing a public art museum in May last year, a project budget of 28 billion KRW has been secured. The museum is scheduled to open in April 2027 and will be built with one basement floor and three above-ground floors, covering a total floor area of 6,700㎡.
