Islamic State Claims Responsibility for Iran Bombing Attack... "Eradication of Heretical Forces"
"Deeds Done by the Grace of Allah"
Concerns Over Further Escalation of Middle East Conflict
The Islamic extremist terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) has recently claimed responsibility for a large-scale bombing in Iran, heightening tensions across the Middle East. As IS, which claims to represent Sunni Islam, intensifies its conflict with Iran, the Shiite stronghold, concerns are rising that the already unstable Middle East situation, due to clashes between Israel and Hamas, could become even more volatile.

In the statement, IS described the bombing as a "martyrdom act by the grace of Allah" and said it was an act of eliminating heretical forces "according to God's will to remove heresy when it is visible."
On the 3rd, a memorial service for Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Revolutionary Guards who died in a U.S. airstrike in 2020, was held in Kerman, southeastern Iran, drawing a crowd of about 3,000 people. During the event, two suicide bombings occurred. It is reported that 103 civilians attending the memorial were killed and over 180 were injured in the attacks.
This is the first time since October 2022 that IS has carried out a terrorist attack in Iran, following a bombing at a mosque that killed 15 people. IS, which claims to be a Sunni Islamic organization, has long been hostile toward Iran, the Shiite stronghold. In June 2017, IS also carried out a large-scale attack in Tehran, Iran’s capital, storming the parliament (Majlis) and the Imam Khomeini mausoleum, killing 18 civilians.
It is believed that IS targeted Soleimani’s memorial because he had led operations against IS during his lifetime. As commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Soleimani was known for commanding pro-Iranian militias across the Middle East and spearheading military training and logistical support.
Following IS’s terrorist attack, Iranian authorities and pro-Iranian Shiite armed groups across the Middle East are expected to launch large-scale operations to eliminate IS, raising concerns about further destabilization throughout the region. If their military activities coincide with the ongoing clashes between Israel and Hamas, there is a significant risk that the Middle East conflict could escalate unintentionally.

IS has also sent a warning message to Hamas, urging them "not to cooperate with Shiite groups," apparently mindful of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Previously, IS had labeled the Israel-Hamas clashes as a "religious war" and called for all Muslims to unite in attacking Israel.
