Yeongdeungpo-gu Completes Maintenance of 193 Protruding and Subsiding Manholes Using New Construction Method
Comprehensive Manhole Inspection Focused on Aging and Urgency for Road and Pedestrian Safety... 193 Manholes Repaired in 7 Months Along Bus Routes, School Areas, and Residential Complexes... New Construction Method Shortens Work Time, Minimizing Traffic and Pedestrian Disruptions
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it has completed the maintenance of 193 defective manholes after conducting a full inspection to ensure a safe walking environment for drivers and create a pleasant road environment.
Manholes that protrude or have sunk on the road pose a safety threat to drivers due to sudden deceleration or impact of vehicles. In addition, defective manhole covers cause noise, inconvenience to pedestrians, and deterioration of urban aesthetics.
So far, the district has regularly inspected manholes installed on roads in the area and maintained about 200 defective manholes annually. This year, the district conducted a full inspection of 34,766 manholes installed throughout the region.
The main inspection items included checking for cracks or damage to manhole covers, unevenness of surrounding pavement, occurrence of vibration or noise, and the possibility of cover detachment.
Subsequently, maintenance was carried out for about seven months from June last year based on the degree of damage or sinking and urgency of repair.
The priority maintenance targets were ▲ locations where noise, unevenness, or damage hinder traffic or pose a risk of traffic accidents ▲ bus route sections with heavy traffic, areas around schools, residential complexes ▲ manholes in flood-prone areas or those requiring maintenance in preparation for the rainy season.
In particular, this maintenance introduced a new construction method that reduced construction time to one hour compared to the conventional method. Using a composite circular cutter, the pavement cutting surface was quickly separated, and new concrete and surface materials were paved within a short time. As a result, early reopening of traffic and passage minimized inconvenience to vehicle traffic and residents’ walking, improving road smoothness.
Going forward, the district plans to conduct periodic full inspections and checks on all manholes in the area and continuously manage and inspect defective manholes that require urgent maintenance.
