Pukyong National University Boosts 'Regional Innovation Convergence Major'... Targets Glocal Universities
‘PKNU-RIS Major’ First Launch, Joint Curriculum Developed and Operated with Companies and Research Institutes
National Pukyong National University is preparing to welcome the Glocal University by promoting the ‘Regional Innovation Convergence Major’.
National Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-su) announced on the 3rd that it has newly established the ‘PKNU-RIS (Regional Innovation) Major,’ jointly operated with companies and research institutes in the advanced industry sector, marking full preparation for the Glocal University 30 project.
National Pukyong National University has newly established three ‘PKNU-RIS Majors’: △Digital New Technology Startup Convergence Major △Blue Food Tech Convergence Major △Creative Convergence Major, and will begin operation from the first semester of this year.
The newly established ‘PKNU-RIS Major’ was proposed in National Pukyong National University’s Glocal University 30 project plan last year. Its purpose is to build a leading regional development model by jointly operating convergence majors linked to Busan’s strategic and advanced industries in collaboration with companies and research institutes.
Accordingly, the newly established convergence majors plan to cultivate talent tailored to regional industry demands for employment and entrepreneurship, as well as specialized personnel for technology innovation R&D.
The university will develop curricula and support teaching and learning, while companies and research institutes will provide on-site demand projects, field training, and opportunities for student employment and entrepreneurship.
The Digital New Technology Startup Convergence Major aims to nurture talent who will settle in the region and start businesses using digital new technologies, with collaboration led by the Southeast Region Startup Education Innovation Leading Project Group, along with MultiCampus Co., Ltd. and Shinsegae I&C.
The Blue Food Tech Convergence Major aims to cultivate talent active in the blue food tech field and Busan’s seafood processed food innovation ecosystem, led by the Food and Nutrition Major in cooperation with the Food Engineering Major and Busan Technopark Marine Bio Blue Food Center.
The Creative Convergence Major aims to nurture creative convergence talent equipped with theoretical and practical capabilities in cultural content such as scenarios and web novels, led by the Korean Language and Literature Department in collaboration with KNN Media Plus and Romantique.
National Pukyong National University will establish a total of 10 convergence majors, including these three, as well as Global Urban Studies Convergence Major, Smart International Logistics Convergence Major, Smart Port Logistics Convergence Major, Clean Energy Convergence Major, Smart Marine Mobility Convergence Major, Secondary Battery Convergence Major, and Global Blue Fisheries Convergence Major, to foster interdisciplinary talent.

In addition, National Pukyong National University plans to create synergy in nurturing interdisciplinary talent by expanding the operation of 31 student-designed majors, including the newly established ‘Immersive Content Planning Student-Designed Major,’ which integrates advanced VR technology-centered Human ICT Convergence Major, Korean Language and Literature Department, Journalism and Information Major, and online courses from Coursera, the world’s largest learning platform, designed directly by students.
