A Japan Airlines (JAL) aircraft landing on the runway at Haneda Airport in Japan caught fire after colliding with an aircraft transporting earthquake-related supplies, prompting an emergency evacuation of 379 passengers and crew members.
According to Japan's public broadcaster NHK on the 2nd, at around 5:47 PM, JAL Flight 516 caught fire immediately after landing on runway C at Haneda Airport. The aircraft had departed from New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido at 4 PM and was scheduled to land at 5:40 PM.
JAL reported that a total of 379 people were on board the aircraft, including 367 passengers, among them 8 children, and 12 crew members, all of whom evacuated safely.
NHK stated that there is a possibility that the JAL aircraft collided with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft. According to the Japan Coast Guard, the aircraft involved in the collision was the MA722 aircraft belonging to Haneda Airport, which was transporting supplies to the Niigata Airport base related to the magnitude 7.6 earthquake that occurred the previous day.
There were 6 people on board this aircraft, with one person reported injured. However, the status of the other 5 individuals is currently unknown.
Initially, the fire on JAL Flight 516 was concentrated mainly around the engine area, but now the entire aircraft is engulfed in flames.
