The leaders of the United States and China exchanged congratulatory messages on the first day of the new year to mark the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, agreeing on the need to continuously develop bilateral ties.

According to foreign media including China's state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 1st, Chinese President Xi Jinping stated in a congratulatory message sent to U.S. President Joe Biden, "I hope to work together with President Biden to continue steering the course of China-U.S. relations, bringing happiness to the peoples of both countries and promoting world peace and development."
President Xi also said, "President Biden and I opened the 'San Francisco Vision' for the future at the San Francisco meeting last November, which pointed the direction for the development of China-U.S. relations," emphasizing, "Both countries must earnestly implement the important joint understandings and achievements of our leaders and promote the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations through concrete actions."
He described the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the U.S. as "a major event in the history of bilateral and international relations," noting, "Over the past 45 years, China-U.S. relations have faced storms but have generally progressed forward." He added, "Mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and mutually beneficial cooperation are the correct path for the coexistence of the two great powers, China and the U.S.," and "This should be the direction of joint efforts by both countries in the new era."
President Biden also emphasized in his congratulatory message to President Xi, "Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1979, the connection between the U.S. and China has promoted prosperity and opportunities for the United States, China, and the world." He stressed, "I am committed to responsibly managing this important relationship," adding, "I look forward to continuing to advance China-U.S. relations based on the progress achieved through multiple meetings and discussions by our predecessors and ourselves."
