According to Manmin Central Church on the 1st, Chairman Lee passed away the previous day at the age of 80. Lee Su-jin, the acting chairman and his daughter, announced the death of Chairman Lee through a sermon broadcast online the day before.

Previously, Chairman Lee was arrested and indicted on charges of sexually assaulting and molesting nine female church members of Manmin Central Church over 40 times for several years. In August 2019, the Supreme Court confirmed his 16-year prison sentence. He was serving his sentence at Daegu Prison but was released early last year after applying for a stay of execution due to a terminal cancer diagnosis.
