Daejeon Baby Boomer Population '187,000' Accounts for 13% of Total Population
The Baby Boomer population in Daejeon was surveyed to be approximately 187,000, accounting for 13% of the total regional population.
Daejeon City analyzed and announced the results of the "2023 Baby Boomer Statistics" on the 29th. Baby Boomers refer to those born between 1955 and 1963.
The Baby Boomer statistics have been compiled for the fifth time this year, first developed by Daejeon City in 2015, the first among special and metropolitan cities nationwide. The statistics cover five areas: population, welfare, health, labor, and housing of Baby Boomers.
According to the survey results, the total Baby Boomer population residing in Daejeon this year was 187,921. This means that 1.3 out of every 10 people in the region are Baby Boomers, which is a 1.9% decrease compared to 2021 (191,487).
By gender, there are 96,485 females (51.3%) and 91,436 males (48.7%). By birth year, those born in 1961 are the largest group with 24,351 people (13.0%), while those born in 1956 are the smallest with 17,907 people (9.5%).
The Baby Boomer mortality rate was recorded at 585.8 per 100,000 people. By gender, the male mortality rate was 898.2 per 100,000, which is 608.5 higher than the female mortality rate of 289.7 per 100,000.
This year, the number of Baby Boomers moving into Daejeon from other cities and provinces was 3,556 (23.3%). By region, the largest number came from Chungnam with 735 people (20.7%), followed by Gyeonggi with 591 (16.6%), Sejong with 453 (12.7%), Seoul with 444 (12.5%), and Chungbuk with 437 (12.3%).
The number of employed Baby Boomers residing in the region was 90,693 (48.1%), a 5.3% (5,067 people) decrease compared to 2021. Among the employed, 47,393 (52.3%) were regular workers, 22,926 (25.3%) were temporary or daily workers, and 20,374 (22.5%) were self-employed. By gender, males numbered 53,184 (58.6%), which is 15,675 more than females at 37,509 (41.4%).
The number of Baby Boomers owning housing in Daejeon was 79,401, with a total of 87,454 housing units owned. This equates to an average of 1.10 housing units per person.
Regarding housing ownership, 73,609 Baby Boomers (92.7%) owned one unit, 4,939 (6.2%) owned two units, and 853 (1.1%) owned three or more units.
By housing type, apartments were the most common with 59,371 units (67.9%), followed by detached houses with 17,645 units (20.2%), and row houses and multi-family houses with 8,590 units (9.8%).
Additionally, among Baby Boomer households this year, 12,728 were recipients of the National Basic Livelihood Security, accounting for 6.7% of the total Baby Boomer population.
Also, 96.2% (181,425 people) of Baby Boomers were enrolled in the National Health Insurance, with the average monthly health insurance medical expenses per person being 248,000 KRW, a 26.5% increase compared to 2021.
Among Baby Boomer households, the major six chronic diseases were recorded as follows: hypertension with 54,002 cases, diabetes with 27,607, cerebral infarction with 2,837, renal failure with 1,867, schizophrenia with 616, and dementia with 545 cases.

Han Jong-tak, Policy Planning Officer of Daejeon City, stated, "We will continuously analyze the elderly population, welfare, health, and economic activity status following the retirement of the Baby Boomer generation to utilize this data in establishing policies across various fields."
