Seoul Average Price Rises to 1,000 Won Per Piece
European students visiting Myeongdong during the Christmas holiday were surprised to hear the prices of street food, sparking attention.
On the 24th, Mai, an international student from Estonia, uploaded a video titled "Mai Fainted in Shock After Being Surprised by Street Stall Prices While Going to Eat Bungeoppang in Myeongdong" on her YouTube channel 'Kimchi Gwisin Mai'.

They found a Japanese-style bungeoppang stall selling "Croissant Taiyaki" and asked about the price. When told it was 4,000 won per piece, their eyes widened in surprise. They repeatedly asked, "Is it 4,000 won for one?" and wondered, "Why is it so expensive?"
Wanting to eat the Korean-style bungeoppang instead of taiyaki, the two looked for another stall. They found a Korean-style bungeoppang stall selling 4 pieces for 5,000 won. This price is much higher than the Seoul average price of 2 pieces for 1,000 won or 3 pieces for 2,000 won, and only cash payments were accepted.
Mai also noted in subtitles that "Although this is relatively cheap for Myeongdong, it is still very expensive," sharing the average Seoul bungeoppang prices.
Viewers of the video reacted with comments such as "Greedy merchants who shame South Korea," "I buy illegal street stall bungeoppang in cold weather because they work hard, so I don't mind paying a bit more, but 4 pieces for 5,000 won in the heart of Myeongdong, and cash only? They should apply fixed prices or remove the stalls," and "Charging exorbitant prices without paying taxes?"
