KT, KOREN Enhancement... Backbone Network Bandwidth Increased 10 Times
KT announced on the 19th that it has upgraded the backbone of the hyper-connected intelligent research and development network (KOREN) to 1Tbps, and will provide faster and more stable services to institutions using KOREN starting from the new year 2024.
KOREN is a non-profit test network where future network leading technologies and related equipment can be researched, tested, and verified, with the Korea National Information Society Agency (NIA) overseeing its construction and operation. As part of the KOREN advancement project, the construction of the 1Tbps backbone network has expanded the backbone bandwidth up to 10 times compared to the previous (100~400Gbps).

Through the KOREN backbone network upgrade, KT expects to improve the efficiency of research requiring wider data bandwidth such as ChatGPT, artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and cloud conducted by domestic and international industries, research institutes, and universities.

Son Dae-ho, KT’s Head of Voice, Data Proposal and Execution, said, “The construction of the 1Tbps backbone network upgrade is the first commercialized case in Korea, and it is expected to evolve into a backbone network of 10Tbps or higher, which is 10 times faster in the future.” He added, “This will serve as an opportunity to revitalize the KOREN project and contribute to the development of the domestic telecommunications market in the field of next-generation network transmission.”
