80-Year-Old Elderly Living Alone Donates 2 Million Won Saved Over 10 Years, Warm Neighborly Love
Donated 2 Million Won, Requesting Support for Low-Income Students by Saving 10,000 to 20,000 Won Monthly for 10 Years
"I have received a lot of help in my life, so now it's time to give back. It’s not a large amount, but please make sure it reaches the young students who are studying hard despite difficulties."
On the afternoon of the 12th, an anonymous elderly person in their 80s visited the Dapsimni 1-dong Community Center in Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung). The elderly person was a basic livelihood security recipient, living with the support of the government and neighbors.
With a grateful heart, the elderly person wanted to give back to neighbors facing difficulties. Despite a modest income, they carefully saved 10,000 to 20,000 KRW each month for 10 years, accumulating 2 million KRW, which they brought in an envelope with great care.
The elderly person requested that the 2 million KRW be used as scholarships to help low-income students focus on their studies, saying, "I still remember when my father passed away during my childhood and I couldn’t even attend middle school. If this can be even a small help for young students to move toward a better tomorrow, I have no greater wish."
Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, "The heart of this elderly person, who wants to help others despite their own hardships, is truly warm. We will ensure that this precious donation, which has been carefully saved over time, is delivered to help students in difficult circumstances continue their education." He added, "I hope this donation will serve as an example to many and encourage us to look once more at our neighbors in need, fostering a chain of compassion."
The donation will be handed over to the Seoul Community Chest of Korea and used to support students in need of assistance.
