Famous Infertility Specialist Impregnates Patient with His Own Sperm... Shocking in the US
Former Harvard Medical School Professor on Trial for 'Medical Rape'
Using Own Sperm in Artificial Insemination at Infertility Clinic
An infertility specialist who impregnated patients with his own sperm in a so-called 'medical rape' case has caused an uproar in the United States.
On the 14th (local time), NBC and other local US media reported that Dr. Merle Borger, a former Harvard Medical School professor who founded Boston IVF, one of the largest infertility clinics in the US, has been brought to trial. He is accused of secretly impregnating patients.
Dr. Borger is regarded as a pioneer in the field of infertility treatment. In 2020, he published a memoir expressing his views on ethical concerns related to artificial insemination and his role as an advocate for women's health care.

Vester's mother, a woman named Sarah Defoan, underwent artificial insemination at Dr. Borger's infertility clinic. At that time, Dr. Borger told Defoan that the sperm was donated by an anonymous donor similar to her husband, and Vester was born in 1981.
Vester said, "Saying I was shocked when I found out is an understatement; it felt like reality had changed," and added, "My mother trusted Dr. Borger as a medical professional during the most vulnerable time in her life, and it is very shocking that he acted without the honesty and ethics one expects from a doctor."
Adam Wolf, the legal representative of Defoan, pointed out, "Dr. Borger did not obtain any consent from my client," and called it "a heinous, intentional, unethical, and unacceptable illegal act."

Meanwhile, the case of Dr. Donald Klein, a representative figure who committed medical rape, was made into a Netflix original documentary titled Our Father last year. Dr. Klein inseminated dozens of patients with his own sperm over more than ten years starting in the 1970s. DNA tests revealed that as of 2022, Dr. Klein has more than 90 children.
