Weekend Nationwide Snowfall and Freezing Temperatures... Beware of Icy Roads

View original imageOn the weekend of the 16th and 17th, a severe cold snap accompanied by strong winds will begin nationwide. As rain and snow fall in subzero temperatures, icy roads may form, so caution is needed when going outside.
On Saturday the 16th, the entire country will be cloudy, with rain or snow expected in the metropolitan area (excluding southwestern Gyeonggi), inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon until 6 p.m., and in the western inland areas of North Gyeongsang until late at night. On the morning of the 17th, rain or snow will fall in southwestern Gyeonggi, North Chungcheong, and western inland South Gyeongsang, and by night, in the Chungnam region, Jeolla region, and Jeju Island.
The expected precipitation in Seoul, Incheon, and northern Gyeonggi on the 16th is around 5 mm. Southern Gyeonggi is also forecasted to receive about 5 mm of precipitation by the 17th. During the weekend, 5 to 10 mm of rain or snow will fall in the Chungcheong and Jeolla regions.
Although the precipitation amount is not large, significant snowfall will accumulate mainly in the western regions. Seoul, Incheon, and northern Gyeonggi are expected to see 1 to 3 cm of snow, with southwestern Gyeonggi receiving up to 7 cm. Other expected snowfall amounts include 5 to 10 cm in the northern mountainous areas of Gangwon, 3 to 8 cm in inland Gangwon, 2 to 7 cm in northern North Chungcheong, 5 to 15 cm in North Jeolla, 5 to 10 cm in Gwangju and western South Jeolla, and 10 to 20 cm in the mountainous areas of Jeju Island.
In particular, some parts of the mountainous areas of Jeju Island may see snow accumulation exceeding 30 cm. In North Jeolla and western Gwangju and South Jeolla, some places will accumulate more than 20 cm and 15 cm of snow, respectively. The highest temperatures nationwide on the 16th are forecasted to range from minus 5 to plus 7 degrees Celsius. In Seoul and Incheon, the maximum temperature will remain at minus 3 degrees Celsius. The cold will intensify further on Sunday the 17th, with morning low temperatures nationwide staying between minus 17 and minus 3 degrees Celsius.

On the 17th, many places including Seoul (minus 12 degrees), Incheon (minus 11 degrees), Paju (minus 16 degrees), Cheorwon (minus 17 degrees), and Chungju and Cheonan (minus 13 degrees) will see morning temperatures drop below minus 10 degrees Celsius. The daytime high on the 17th is also forecasted to range from minus 8 to plus 3 degrees Celsius, meaning subzero temperatures will persist in some areas even during the day.
