At the meeting, the committee reviewed the company's ESG management activities for this year and discussed ways to implement more efficient management in 2024. Key agenda items included ▲ plans for improving environment, safety, and governance ▲ establishment and activities of a social contribution subcommittee within the committee ▲ publication of the responsible minerals report ▲ product carbon footprint ▲ and the carbon neutrality roadmap.
In particular, as a follow-up to the social contribution activities discussed at the 3rd quarter meeting, the Sustainability Management Committee considered establishing a social contribution subcommittee through amendments to the committee regulations. The establishment of the subcommittee aims to execute social contribution activities more systematically and strategically. The subcommittee will set the direction for Korea Zinc’s overall social contribution activities and plan/monitor donations and volunteer work.
There was also in-depth discussion regarding the establishment of the carbon neutrality roadmap. At the Investor Day held on the 7th, Korea Zinc announced plans to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 40% from 2020 to 2040, and further reduce emissions by 60% from 2041 to 2050. In line with this, the company shared plans to simultaneously achieve RE100 and carbon neutrality by 2050 through clean energy production and adoption, as well as improvements in facilities and processes.
Additionally, progress and content related to the conflict minerals report were reviewed. This report, which is currently under preliminary research with the goal of public release next year, will include measures to strengthen supply chain management and reduce risks in raw material procurement. Other agenda items addressed included responses to the greenhouse gas emissions trading system, cooperative safety and health partnerships with suppliers, and the establishment of a human rights management system.
Korea Zinc is recognized for its prompt response to various domestic and international ESG issues through quarterly Sustainability Management Committee meetings. At the first meeting of 2023, the company proactively discussed the production of Green Metal and became the first in the domestic non-ferrous metals industry to establish a lifecycle-based carbon footprint measurement plan. At the second meeting, supply chain issues were discussed to build capabilities to respond to countries where supply chain management is becoming increasingly important, such as the United States and the European Union.
