'Sincheon-dong Meokja Alley' Designated as Seoul City Local Commercial Area Revitalization Project, Inauguration Ceremony on December 4
Efforts to Boost Brand Value and Revitalize Commercial Area through Sales Increase Events and Sports Theme Street Creation
Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) is focusing its efforts to transform the Jamsilsaenae Station commercial area, formerly known as ‘Sincheon-dong Food Alley,’ into an attractive and vibrant destination.
The area around Jamsilsaenae Station has grown significantly since the 1988 Seoul Olympics, attracting numerous sports fans. However, the aging Seoul Sports Complex and the absence of spectators at professional baseball games due to COVID-19 have rapidly weakened the commercial district.
In response, Seoul City designated the area as a local commercial revitalization zone last September, and Songpa-gu is implementing various projects based on the voices of residents and merchants.
In particular, the district plans to support branding-focused promotion and marketing by reflecting the unique characteristics of Jamsilsaenae Station near Jamsil Main Stadium, including event planning and discovering commercial district stories.
First, over the next six months, an event to increase sales will be held in collaboration with the Saemaeul Market Merchants Association. A challenge will be conducted through the ‘WalkOn’ app, a walking habit formation platform, to attract tourists and residents.
To participate, individuals walk through the alleys of Jamsilsaenae Station and pass through three checkpoints to complete the first mission! By submitting a receipt showing a purchase of 30,000 KRW or more, regardless of item, within the commercial district, participants can receive a 5,000 KRW Songpa Love Gift Certificate. The district plans to distribute these gift certificates monthly to the first 1,000 participants, aiming to stimulate local consumption.
The street environment has also been newly enhanced to add visual interest. To increase visitor engagement, dynamic pictogram images themed around sports have been painted on the pavement at the intersection in front of the Jamsil Comprehensive Social Welfare Center. Additionally, new landscape lighting has been installed on flower beds and sculptures at the entrance of the commercial district on Olympic-ro 8-gil to create a beautiful atmosphere at night.
Furthermore, the district will provide customized support for small business owners to revitalize food offerings. Using big data, a comparative analysis of the Jamsilsaenae Station commercial area, Jamsil Station commercial area, and Bangi-dong Food Alley commercial area will be conducted to develop strategic support policies aimed at improving individual business management and competitiveness, alongside merchant education.
At the proclamation ceremony held on the 4th, local residents were invited to enjoy arts and cultural performances and were informed about the commercial revitalization projects to encourage participation. The event featured a performance by Jung Dan, the 8th lead vocalist of the band ‘Boohwal,’ followed by a sports cheerleading performance, which heightened residents’ interest.

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, “Establishing a brand that reflects the characteristics of the area within the commercial district and creating a virtuous cycle where the local economy recovers and jobs increase is the shortcut to a prosperous Songpa. We will continue to pay close attention and actively support efforts to attract external tourists and revitalize the commercial district.”
