Establishment of 'International Science Business Belt Development Implementation Plan'
To Improve Living Conditions for Research and Corporate Personnel
An 'International Science Business Belt Development Implementation Plan' has been established to improve the research functions and residential conditions for on-site personnel in the Daejeon International Science Business Belt hub district, transforming it into a global science-industry ecosystem.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 4th an implementation plan to create a world-class basic research environment and to develop the fusion of basic research and business by linking and advancing the hub districts (Daejeon Sindong, Dungok, Doryong) and functional districts (Sejong, Cheongju, Cheonan).
The implementation plan includes measures from 2023 to 2030 to enhance the residential environment in transportation, education, and housing sectors within the Science Belt hub districts, and to continuously develop it as an open research hub with international residential conditions supporting science commercialization. Consultations were also held with related organizations such as Daejeon Metropolitan City, the Administrative City Construction Agency, Korea Land and Housing Corporation, and the Research and Development Special Zone Promotion Foundation.
To improve transportation conditions, a Science Belt stop will be installed on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line connecting Osong and Daejeon by 2025. By the first half of 2025, design services for the construction of a metropolitan connecting road linking Bugang Station on the Gyeongbu Line, the Science Belt, and Bukdaejeon IC on the Honam Expressway will be completed.
For educational improvements, a workplace shared daycare center for employees of resident companies will be established by 2027. An integrated school for kindergarten, elementary, and secondary education is under construction, aiming to open in the second semester of next year.
In the living environment sector, the outer reservoir of the Science Belt will be remodeled and developed into an ecological rest area connected with existing waterfront walking paths. Plans to build public facilities such as a cultural welfare complex and a 119 safety center will also be established by next year.
Additionally, a Science Belt Support Center (tentative name) will be established in 2025 to promote science and technology commercialization, and customized support projects for the hub districts will be identified.
