Ioniq 5 and Sportage Receive Highest Collision Safety Rating in the U.S.
IIHS 'Top Safety Pick Plus' Awarded
Hyundai Motor Group announced on the 4th that the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia Sportage were selected for the highest rating, ‘Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+)’, in the crash evaluations announced by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the United States.
Starting this year, IIHS has raised the evaluation criteria for side impact and pedestrian crash prevention and applied stricter standards for headlamp evaluations. In the side impact test, the collision object is now heavier and the collision speed is faster than before. The pedestrian crash prevention evaluation added a nighttime test that did not exist previously. For headlamp evaluations, both TSP and TSP+ require all trims of the vehicle to receive a rating of ‘acceptable’ or higher.
To receive the TSP+ rating, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of ‘good’ in four categories: driver-side small overlap, passenger-side small overlap, front crash, and side crash. It must also achieve a rating of ‘advanced’ or higher in the front crash prevention system tests (for both vehicles and pedestrians) during day and night, and receive a rating of ‘acceptable’ or higher in headlamp evaluations across all trims of the vehicle.
IIHS is a nonprofit organization established in 1959 that annually evaluates and announces comprehensive results on the crashworthiness and crash prevention performance of vehicles released in the U.S. market.
In February this year, Hyundai Motor Group’s Genesis G90, Hyundai Palisade, and Kia Telluride, in August Genesis GV60, GV70, electrified GV70 model, GV80, and Hyundai Ioniq 6, and in October Genesis G80 and electrified G80 model, among a total of 10 models, received the TSP+ rating under the strengthened evaluation criteria.
