Gyeonggi-do to Offer 1,000 Won Discount on Youth Shared Bicycle Fees Starting January Next Year
Gyeonggi Province is expanding the target of its youth transportation fare support project to include 'shared bicycles.'
On the 4th, Gyeonggi Province and Gyeonggi Transportation Corporation announced that starting January 3rd next year, they will implement shared bicycle usage and payment services through the Gyeonggi integrated transportation platform app ‘Ddokta,’ and will carry out the ‘Youth Shared Bicycle Usage Fare Support Project,’ which offers a 1,000 KRW discount on fares for youth in Gyeonggi Province.
The support target is youth aged 13 to 23 who reside in Gyeonggi Province according to their resident registration. When using shared bicycles linked through the Gyeonggi integrated transportation platform app ‘Ddokta,’ they will receive an immediate 1,000 KRW discount per use.
The discount can be combined with the existing public transportation fare support, allowing for a maximum annual support of 120,000 KRW (up to 60,000 KRW per half-year). Currently, there are about 40,000 shared bicycles in the province, with 8,000 bicycles (20%) eligible for the fare discount. Gyeonggi Province plans to add more than 10,000 eligible bicycles by the first half of next year.
According to Gyeonggi Province, shared bicycles have recently been gaining attention as an eco-friendly future transportation method that practices carbon neutrality and serves as an alternative to public transportation, leading to a rapid increase in shared bicycle users within the province. Notably, youth account for 40% of shared bicycle users.
Last November, Gyeonggi Governor Kim Dong-yeon attended the ‘Ansan City Livelihood Field Handshake Talk’ and received a suggestion from a middle school student to include youth shared bicycle fare support in the Gyeonggi youth transportation fare support project. He promised to review the proposal on the spot.
