Professor Song Gwang-yong of Chung-Ang University Physics Department Selected as Fellow of the Optical Society of America
Professor Song Gwang-yong of the Department of Physics at Chung-Ang University has been selected as a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OPTICA).
The Optical Society of America was established in 1916 and currently has over 18,000 members from more than 80 countries. It is renowned as the most prestigious society in the fields of optics and photonics, the sciences of light.
OPTICA annually selects a very small number of members who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of optics and photonics to be awarded the Fellow title. Professor Song has conducted research using Brillouin scattering, the scattering of light caused by acoustic waves, based on optical fibers. His achievements in pioneering the fields of Brillouin slow light and Brillouin dynamic gratings, which are applied in optical signal processing and optical fiber sensors, have been recognized through this Fellow selection.

Professor Song earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and worked as a researcher in nonlinear optics and optical sensor experiments at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the University of Tokyo. Since joining Chung-Ang University in 2007, he has been nurturing successors to lead the field of optics. Professor Song said, “I am grateful to the researchers and graduate students who have worked with me on research so far. I will continue to strive for research and the training of future scholars.”
