Daegu Ihyeon Elementary Teacher Kim Minjeong and Maechun Middle School Senior Teacher Lee Eunju Receive 'Korea Mathematics Education Award'
Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Kang Eun-hee) announced on the 29th that Kim Min-jung, a teacher at Ihyeon Elementary School in Daegu, and Lee Eun-joo, a senior teacher at Maechun Middle School, were selected as recipients of the ‘2023 Korea Mathematics Education Award’ hosted by the Ministry of Education and organized by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity.
The ‘Korea Mathematics Education Award’ has been implemented since 2013 to discover and reward teachers who have contributed to the development of mathematics education, to enhance the pride of mathematics teachers, and to solidify mathematics education through the dissemination of excellent cases. Ten awardees are selected nationwide from elementary school teachers and middle and high school mathematics teachers without consideration of school or regional distribution.
Kim Min-jung of Ihyeon Elementary School in Daegu was recognized for her continuous challenges and efforts to establish elementary mathematics education where both student-led and teacher-led initiatives grow together.
In particular, she developed teaching and learning materials for basic math skills targeting elementary students and various math experience programs, and conducted numerous math sharing training sessions for parents and teachers. She also took the lead in the development of elementary math education in Daegu and across Korea by participating in the writing of the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum and textbooks, as well as the research and writing team for the 2022 revised national textbooks for grades 1-2 in mathematics.
Lee Eun-joo, senior teacher at Maechun Middle School in Daegu, was evaluated as having a unique passion for improving classroom instruction, continuously conducting various educational activities including operating a flipped classroom research group.

She has devoted efforts to developing videos and content materials for the basic academic skills diagnosis and correction system, developing teaching cases and evaluation materials through student assessment support group activities, and creating examples of essay and oral assessments. In addition, she has worked to generalize the results of her teaching cases and material development through various lectures and training sessions to promote changes in classroom instruction and evaluation not only for teachers in Daegu but also for teachers in other cities and provinces.
Kang Eun-hee, Superintendent of Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education, said, “This award is the result of teachers’ efforts to improve classroom instruction and innovate teaching and assessment,” adding, “We will continue to implement policies that strengthen teachers’ capabilities such as training support and actively support teachers’ growth.”
