Uicheon Jangwolgyo Reborn as an Arch Bridge Without Piers
Jangwolgyo Bridge, originally built over Ui Stream in 1970, has been reborn as an arch bridge without piers. The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that the Jangwolgyo Bridge, connecting Jangwi-dong in Seongbuk-gu and Wolgye-dong in Nowon-gu, will be reconstructed as a first-class arch bridge and opened to traffic from 4 p.m. on the 28th.
A first-class arch bridge is a single-span bridge without piers (structures supporting the bridge load) that can accommodate vehicles weighing up to 40 tons.
The previous Jangwolgyo Bridge had safety issues as its two supporting piers obstructed the flow of Ui Stream during the rainy season. Additionally, vehicles weighing over 32 tons were not allowed to pass, requiring detours via other roads.
The city explained that the arch bridge design was chosen for aesthetic reasons, and landscape lighting was added to harmonize with Ui Stream. The width of the pedestrian walkway and roadway was expanded from the previous 20 meters to 23.7 meters to improve user convenience.
