Chung Euisun, Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, has been selected as the 'Automotive Industry Leader of the Year.' The globally renowned automotive media outlet, Automotive News, chose Chairman Chung as this year's figure. Hyundai Motor Group received high praise for leading innovation in the industry by pioneering various future mobility technologies.
On the 27th (local time), the U.S. automotive media Automotive News announced 38 individuals as the '2023 Automotive News All-Stars' and named Chairman Chung as the highest honor, 'Automotive Industry Leader of the Year.'
Automotive News is an automotive media outlet founded in the U.S. in 1925. In addition to English-speaking readers, it publishes online and Chinese editions, holding global influence. Through rigorous screening and evaluation by the editorial editors and affiliated reporters, it announces about 30 global automotive industry all-stars annually. Among them, the individual who has demonstrated the most outstanding leadership in the global automotive industry over the past year is selected as the 'Automotive Industry Leader of the Year.' Past recipients include Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat Chrysler in 2014, Mary Barra, Chairman and CEO of GM in 2018, and Bill Ford, Chairman of Ford in 2020.
Automotive News stated, "Chairman Chung is leading various future technologies and writing a new chapter in mobility," and "Hyundai Motor Group is driving innovation in the automotive industry" as the reasons for the selection. Marking his third anniversary as chairman this year, Chairman Chung has declared his intention to make Hyundai Motor Group a 'game changer' in the next-generation mobility market and has continued his disruptive innovation efforts.
First, he pursued differentiated electrification strategies and new businesses. Hyundai Motor Group's dedicated electric vehicle platform 'E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform),' unveiled in 2020, was developed following Chairman Chung's decision that a world-class electric vehicle platform was necessary to lead the electrification era. Dedicated electric vehicle models based on E-GMP, such as the Ioniq 5 and EV6, have swept major awards including World Car of the Year (WCOTY), North American Car of the Year (NACOTY), and European Car of the Year (ECOTY), receiving high praise in global markets.
Chairman Chung's next-generation mobility vision, aimed at providing humanity with a higher level of mobility experience, is materializing and accelerating through robotics, autonomous driving, AAM (Advanced Air Mobility), and SDV (Software-Defined Vehicle). In robotics, Hyundai Motor Group is conducting research to internalize core technologies centered on Boston Dynamics and Robotics Lab, which it acquired. In autonomous driving, the joint venture Motional plans to launch an unmanned robotaxi service in Las Vegas, USA, by the end of this year.
AAM is considered a core element in future city developments such as smart cities. Hyundai Motor Group aims to start commercial services by 2028 through 'Supernal,' an independent urban air mobility company in the U.S. To this end, it is accelerating the establishment of an ecosystem covering future air mobility in collaboration with domestic and international partners such as Rolls-Royce, a British aircraft engine manufacturer, and Microsoft. Additionally, Hyundai Motor Group has set a plan to convert all vehicle models to SDV by 2025. The policy is to enable users to enjoy safe and comfortable freedom of mobility connected through software.
