Former EXO Member Kris Sentenced to 13 Years in Prison for Sexual Assault of a Minor
Beijing Court Dismisses Appeal... Upholds Original Verdict
Former EXO member Kris Wu (Chinese name Wu Yifan, stage name Kris) was finally sentenced to 13 years in prison in China on charges of sexual assault, including against minors.
According to China Central Television (CCTV) and others on the 24th, the Beijing No. 3 Intermediate People's Court upheld the original sentence of 13 years imprisonment in the appeal trial this morning, where Kris was charged with rape and group obscenity. Since China has a two-tier trial system, the appeal trial is the final judgment.
The Beijing court ruled, "He had sexual intercourse with multiple female victims by taking advantage of their intoxicated state. This violates the women's will and constitutes rape." It also stated, "He gathered other women, including minors under 18, to engage in obscene activities and was the main perpetrator, so group obscenity charges also apply," maintaining the original verdict.
Kris was previously accused of raping three women using the same method, including a woman who was intoxicated in December 2020. He was also charged with engaging in obscene acts with two women along with others in July 2018.
In 2021, Chinese influencer Meizhou publicly accused Kris of raping her when she was 17 years old in 2020. Meizhou condemned him on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, stating, "Kris is a sex offender who had sexual relations with a minor." Subsequently, 24 women came forward claiming to have been victimized by Kris.
Following this, Kris was detained on July 31, 2021, on rape charges and has undergone investigation and trial since then. The first trial at the Chaoyang District People's Court in Beijing last November found Kris guilty, sentencing him to 11 years and 6 months for rape and 1 year and 10 months for group obscenity. The court also ordered that he be deported abroad after serving his sentence.
