Kakao's Siheung Data Center Establishment Falls Through... "Reviewing New Candidate Sites"
Kakao's plan to establish a second data center at Seoul National University Siheung Campus in Siheung-si, Gyeonggi-do has been canceled.
On the 23rd, Kakao stated, "We have been discussing the establishment of the data center (IDC) with Seoul National University from various angles, but it has been decided to proceed in another region."
Last April, Kakao signed a memorandum of understanding with Seoul National University to build the data center. At that time, Kakao announced plans to establish a data center with a power capacity of 100 megawatts (MW) on an area approximately 19 times the size of a soccer field within the Seoul Siheung Campus. The goal was to start construction next year and complete it by 2026.

Subsequently, the project reached the stage of administrative procedures such as urban planning permits, but during consultations with Seoul National University, it was finally decided not to proceed. Instead, candidate sites are being reviewed in other regions. The data center recently completed in Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do, is scheduled to operate normally in the first quarter of next year.
