Gyeonggi-do to Pilot Opportunity Income for Athletes Next Year... Public Hearing in December
Gyeonggi Province plans to introduce 'Opportunity Income for Athletes' as a new project next year. To this end, Gyeonggi Province has begun gathering opinions from the sports community.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 21st that as a flagship policy of Governor Kim Dong-yeon during the 8th term of the civilian government, it will expand opportunity income?which provides income compensation for a certain period to those who create value in society but are not compensated?to the sports sector. The province is preparing a policy seminar in November and a public hearing in December.
Earlier, on the 17th, Gyeonggi Province held a '2024 New Sports Policy Promotion Meeting' at the Gyeonggi Sports Council Hall with executive directors and secretaries-general of 43 disabled and non-disabled sports organizations in the province to explain the purpose of introducing opportunity income for athletes.
The target recipients of the opportunity income for athletes are active and retired athletes aged 19 or older, registered with the Korea Sports Council or the Korea Paralympic Committee, whose household income is at or below 120% of the median income. Approximately 7,800 athletes in Gyeonggi Province fall under this category.
Gyeonggi Province will adjust the policy details based on feedback from the sports community, and after consultations with the Ministry of Health and Welfare and discussions on establishing a social security system, if government approval is obtained, the project will be implemented as a pilot program next year.
