Ulsan Health and Environment Research Institute Golf Course Residual Pesticide Investigation
Golf Course Soil and Pond, Trace Amounts of Low-Toxicity Pesticides Detected
What is the contamination status of golf courses and nearby villages caused by pesticides used at golf courses in the Ulsan area?
The Ulsan Health and Environment Research Institute announced on the 19th that the pesticide residue test conducted on five golf courses found no safety issues.
Sample collection for the test was conducted twice in total during the dry season (April to June) and the rainy season (July to September) through a public-private joint effort in accordance with the Water Environment Conservation Act. The test targeted soil from greens and fairways within the golf courses, as well as water quality from ponds and runoff.
According to the Ulsan Health and Environment Research Institute, a total of 24 types of pesticides were tested on 64 soil samples and 32 water samples, resulting in trace amounts of seven low-toxicity pesticides that can be used for turf management being detected.
No pesticides were detected in the small streams near villages adjacent to the golf courses, confirming that the environment is being safely maintained.
Starting from next year's inspection, the institute plans to add chlorothalonil, a fungicide widely used in domestic golf courses, as a new item, increasing the total number of pesticide components tested to 25.
An official from the Health and Environment Research Institute stated, “We will conduct thorough monitoring to prevent environmental damage to surrounding areas and ensure that citizens can safely use the golf courses.”
