A landlord suspected of a 7 billion KRW jeonse fraud in Suwon-si, Gyeonggi Province, has fled overseas, causing setbacks in the investigation.
According to the Suwon Nambu Police Station on the 18th, Mr. A, who owns several villas in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon-si, suddenly disappeared in August just before the return of the jeonse deposit.

Tenants who signed lease contracts worth about 100 million KRW with Mr. A have filed complaints one after another, and the scale of the damage continues to grow. It has also been identified that some households have not yet ended their jeonse contracts.
As of the 18th, a total of 18 complaints have been filed against Mr. A, including 6 at the Suwon Nambu Police Station and 12 at the Suwon Jungbu Police Station. The amount of damages that victims have not recovered is estimated to reach 7 billion KRW.
The Suwon Nambu Police Station issued a notification to report Mr. A upon entry in September and obtained an arrest warrant last month to place him on a wanted list, but the possibility of Mr. A re-entering the country and being caught is low. As the tenants’ worries deepen, the police investigation has reportedly made little progress due to Mr. A’s flight overseas.
Accordingly, the police are first conducting investigations such as verifying victims’ accounts and interviewing witnesses due to Mr. A’s escape. They plan to request an Interpol warrant soon to locate Mr. A and invalidate his passport. They also stated that they will continue criminal justice cooperation with overseas police attach?s.
To expedite the investigation, the police designated the Suwon Nambu Police Station as the dedicated investigation office for Mr. A’s case and decided to consolidate related investigations. A psychological support team consisting of 10 officers, including victim protection officers, has also been established. They will be stationed in shifts of two at the temporary office of the Suwon Nambu Police Station to provide psychological counseling for victims and support health vouchers and emergency supplies.
