Gas Hose 'Snip' by a Man in His 20s... "I Don't Use Gas Because I Eat Delivery"
"Gas Smell Detected" Resident Report Leads to Dispatch
A Cuts Hose, Charged with Gas Leakage
A man in his 20s who claimed he did not need city gas because he usually only ate delivery food was arrested by the police for cutting the city gas hose inside an officetel.
On the 13th, the Suwon Southern Police Station announced that they had arrested a man in his 20s, identified as A, on the spot for gas leakage charges. A is suspected of cutting the city gas hose inside an officetel in Ingye-dong with scissors and releasing gas for about two hours on the early morning of the 10th.
Residents reported to 112 that there was a strong gas smell inside the officetel, which has 28 households, as city gas was leaking.
The police who received the report informed the local station, and seven officers, including Sergeant Ryu Dong-woo, Sergeant Go Seong-jin, and Inspector Lee Ho-jin from the patrol team 3 of the Ingye district unit of Suwon Southern Police Station, rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, the police confirmed the gas smell and visited each household to evacuate about 20 residents. After identifying the cause of the gas smell, the police arrested A at the scene.
According to the police investigation, A reportedly stated that he committed the act because he thought city gas was unnecessary since he usually only ordered delivery food.
A police official said, "This incident could have led to a major accident, but thanks to the safety-focused judgment and prompt action of the responding officers, the damage was prevented," adding, "We will continue to actively carry out community-friendly policing activities to create a safe Suwon."

According to the accident yearbook released by Korea Gas Corporation in June, a total of 950 gas accidents occurred over the past 10 years, with the number peaking at 121 in 2018 and decreasing annually to 73 in 2022.
By gas type, LPG accidents accounted for 446 cases, or 46.9%, followed by 194 cases (20.4%) related to portable butane burners and composite containers, 177 city gas accidents (18.6%), and 133 high-pressure gas accidents (14.0%).
Considering the number of users by gas type, LPG is used by 3.69 million households, which is only 17.6% of the 20.88 million households using city gas, but the number of accidents was 2.6 times higher. Although LPG accidents decreased by 30.6% from 49 cases in 2013 to 34 cases in 2022, which is higher than the overall decrease rate of 18.9%, the accident share remains high.
Additionally, the leading cause of accidents was user negligence with 312 cases (32.8%), followed by facility deficiencies with 236 cases (24.8%), and product aging (malfunction) with 153 cases (16.1%). Despite the overall decrease in gas accidents, accidents involving other companies surged from 2 cases in 2013 to 8 cases in 2022, causing concern.
City gas accidents still occur not only at construction sites but also in homes. In particular, there were 5 home accidents in 2022, more than in 2021.

The most frequent accidents involve residents being poisoned by exhaust gas entering indoors due to improper installation of gas boiler exhaust pipes in homes. However, there have also been cases where explosions occurred due to gas leaks when turning on the flame to cook with defective gas stoves, requiring special caution.
