Seoul's largest-scale kimchi-making of 91,200kg... Organized by Yongsan Welfare Foundation
Unique side events by district including kimchi mixing, tasting, and side dish sharing
Yongsan-gu, Seoul (Mayor Park Hee-young) supported the Yongsan Welfare Foundation’s ‘2023 Love Kimchi Sharing’ event, helping to deliver 11,400 boxes of kimchi.
This year, each box contains 8kg of kimchi, totaling over 90 tons. This is 400 boxes more than last year, making it the largest among Seoul’s autonomous districts.
With funds raised for a warm winter in Yongsan-gu and sponsorship from the Welcome Welfare Foundation, the Yongsan Welfare Foundation purchased the finished kimchi products. Over 500 volunteers, including members of the community security councils from 16 neighborhoods, participated to deliver the kimchi to 8,253 low-income and marginalized households and 167 social welfare facilities and institutions within the district.
Before the kimchi delivery, various commemorative events tailored to each neighborhood’s characteristics were held. These included kimchi mixing experiences, the donor ‘Jeongdawon Neighbor Award’ ceremony, a cake-cutting event to celebrate the kimchi event, and the presentation of children’s cheering drawings, all conducted alongside the kimchi delivery ceremony with local residents.
On the 8th, Namyeong-dong held a kimchi mixing and tasting event with multicultural families, and on the 9th, Hyochang-dong hosted a kimchi mixing experience with children from Hyochang Daycare in the front yard of the community center. On the same day, Cheongpa-dong also provided side dishes, and Wonhyo-ro 1(il)-dong shared pork cutlets.
Mayor Park Hee-young toured the kimchi event sites in the 16 neighborhoods in the following order: Ichon 1(il)-Hangang-ro-Ichon 2(i)-Wonhyo-ro 2(i)-Namyeong-dong (Day 1), Huam-Cheongpa-Wonhyo-ro 1(il)-Yongmun-Hyochang (Day 2), Yongsan 2(i)-Itaewon 2(i)-Itaewon 1(il)-Bogwang-Seobinggo-Hannam (Day 3), encouraging the volunteers.
On the first day of volunteer encouragement, the 8th, he also participated in kimchi mixing with multicultural families in Namyeong-dong, and on the 9th, with children from Hyochang Daycare.

Mayor Park Hee-young stated, “Although the soaring price of napa cabbage has recently stabilized due to government measures, the prices of kimchi ingredients such as salt, red pepper powder, and green onions have risen significantly. We thank the sponsors and volunteers who have helped ease the kimchi-making burden for our neighbors in need.”
