"Kakao Mobility to Open KakaoT Platform... Comprehensive Review of Business Structure"
Kakao Mobility has expressed its intention to completely review its business structure.
On the 13th, Kakao Mobility will hold an emergency meeting with taxi organizations aimed at revising commission fees, and on the 7th, it announced the principles and standards it will adhere to at this meeting.
Kakao Mobility stated, "Regarding the commission fee issue, Kakao Mobility has received many criticisms about the level of commissions on the taxi platform and the way services are operated," adding, "We will completely overhaul the operation methods and system framework to meet the public’s expectations."
It emphasized, "Through discussions with taxi drivers, we will concretize and realize a low commission fee system. We will also reexamine the criticized franchise taxi business structure from the ground up."
Kakao Mobility explained, "We will proactively change the overall operation method of the Kakao T platform going forward," and "Regarding monopoly controversies, we will focus on improving the quality of public transportation and coexistence by opening the Kakao T platform to other taxi platforms."
These measures will be discussed directly by Ryu Geung-seon, CEO of Kakao Mobility, who will attend the meeting in person. The goal is to complete gathering opinions by the end of the year and then announce an implementation plan.
Furthermore, Kakao Mobility stated, "We will further diversify various win-win cooperation activities, such as improving the working environment for mobility workers and providing medical and livelihood support for taxi drivers. Beyond the 'Kakao' umbrella, we will actively pursue overseas expansion and transform ourselves into a global mobility company to start anew."
It added, "The sale of Kakao Mobility is not something Kakao is currently considering at all."
The controversy over Kakao Mobility’s monopoly structure began on the 1st when President Yoon Suk-yeol criticized it. At that time, President Yoon responded to a statement by an individual taxi driver saying, "The abuse of Kakao Taxi’s monopoly position is too severe," by calling it "immoral" and stating, "The government must impose sanctions."
