SK Innovation announced on the 5th that Professor Kannan Ramaswamy of the Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University held a virtual presentation on the 3rd at the SK Seorin Building in Jung-gu, Seoul, sharing the research results of a "comparative case study with a global peer group." This study is Professor Ramaswamy's second focused research following last year, deriving more in-depth results through comparative analysis.
On this day, Professor Ramaswamy analyzed SK Innovation's "Green Transformation" strategy and identified differentiating advantages through comparisons with peer companies. He concluded that SK Innovation's strategy, which includes ▲clear business strategy ▲excellent corporate culture ▲two-track innovation strategy, combined with the entrepreneurial spirit of SK's management aiming to execute these, has a high likelihood of success.
At the presentation, Professor Ramaswamy stated, "SK Innovation is one of the companies steadfastly driving large-scale changes toward an eco-friendly energy future," and added, "The will to act is deeply embedded throughout the company’s vision and business strategies."
For comparison, global petrochemical companies with similar business structures, histories, and business goals to SK Innovation were selected, and their implementation levels were examined based on two axes: focus on eco-friendly strategies and portfolio diversity.
Clear Business Strategy and Leadership Are Key
Professor Ramaswamy pointed out SK Innovation’s unique differentiators as its clear future-oriented business strategy, which has been continued since the days of its predecessor, and the consistent leadership of its management executing this strategy. He highly praised these as major factors contributing to SK Innovation’s performance in a rapidly changing corporate environment.
Professor Ramaswamy said, "Despite its identity as a petrochemical company, SK Innovation announced a bold vision to reduce its carbon footprint by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050," adding, "Within a few years, it has demonstrated clear business achievements in the eco-friendly sector, showing true corporate innovation."
He also cited the source of leadership executing the business strategy as the 'SKMS-based management' and the corporate culture of pursuing 'SUPEX.' He praised, "Management based on SKMS and the culture of pursuing Super Excellence ('SUPEX') have inspired internal members’ sense of purpose and execution capabilities." SKMS (SK Management System) provides the basic direction for SK management and consists of SK’s management philosophy and methodologies for implementing it in practical management.

Professor Ramaswamy diagnosed SK Innovation as a company that does not settle for the status quo but achieves both technological scalability and economic feasibility. He explained that SK Innovation is pursuing a ‘two-track strategy’ that strengthens the efficiency of existing businesses and expands new businesses based on a diversified portfolio. This is because it is a company continuously exploring the difficult task of securing profitability in fossil fuel-based businesses while discovering future business options.
He stated, "Rapid business model transitions are occurring across all SK Innovation affiliates, including SK On and SK IE Technology’s expansion into mobility and securing chemical recycling technologies."
Finally, Professor Ramaswamy also commented on communication methods, saying, "SK Innovation had the highest transparency in sharing business promotion plans within the industry, and no company had a more solid strategic foundation than this." However, he noted, "In an environment where technological competition is intensifying, executing challenging future tasks such as achieving net zero will be a future challenge for SK Innovation."
