"'Teacup Puppy' Sought by Breeding the Mother’s Belly…" The Horrific Reality of the 'Breeding Hell'
Animal Rights Action Kara Representative CBS Radio Interview
In relation to the shocking incident last September where Gyeonggi Province and animal protection groups rescued 1,400 dogs from a puppy breeding farm in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi Province, Jeon Jin-kyung, the representative of the animal rights organization 'Kara' who visited the site with the police, conveyed the horrific conditions by saying, "The dogs were packed tightly like in a bean sprout basket."
On the 3rd, on CBS's 'Kim Hyun-jung's News Show,' Representative Jeon said, "In a space of about 20 pyeong (approximately 66 square meters), all the walls were covered with dog cages, and every bit of the floor, even an area as small as 30㎠, was fully occupied by dogs confined in cages. They were densely laid out on the floor like that, which was very shocking."
The problematic location is the largest legal breeding farm in the country, located in Hwaseong-si. Initially permitted to raise 400 dogs, Kara received a tip that 800 dogs were being raised there. They raided the site with the police and found that over 1,400 dogs were actually being bred, causing great shock.
Representative Jeon said, "They partitioned the floor with cages without any aisles and laid out all the dogs using every bit of the floor space. About 300 dogs were found in one place," adding, "There were five rooms, and ultimately 1,426 dogs were found there."
Among the dogs bred in cramped conditions, many were sick. Representative Jeon explained, "There were too many sick dogs. Diseases caused by contamination were a problem, but also due to inbreeding or indiscriminate breeding to produce small, pretty dogs favored by people, about 30% of the dogs rescued by animal organizations had leg disabilities."
Even more shocking was the freezer piled with carcasses. Representative Jeon said, "About 50 dogs died each month. They said the carcasses had not been disposed of in the freezer for two months, and about 100 bodies were found," adding, "Most of the carcasses were of puppies that died shortly after birth, stillborn puppies, mothers that died after cesarean sections, and even mothers that died during delivery because the puppies got stuck in the birth canal."
Most of this occurred in the process of trading 'teacup puppies,' which are very small in size, like dolls.
Representative Jeon said, "They even found the carcass of a mother dog whose belly was cut open with a utility knife to remove the puppies," adding, "In pet shops, very tiny, doll-like puppies are displayed, but these puppies are not just born naturally; they are born from repeatedly selectively breeding very small and weak mother dogs."
The mother dogs used to give birth to these teacup puppies are too weak to deliver naturally and mostly undergo cesarean sections, during which many mothers reportedly die.

Representative Jeon said, "Regardless of whether they were weak or not, they kept breeding the pretty and small dogs, making them give birth until they died either during birth or cesarean sections," adding, "(The breeding farm owner) claimed that the mother died but the puppies were still moving inside the belly, so they wanted to save them."
