Yongsan-gu Begins Crime Prevention Urban Environment Project
On the 26th of Last Month, Initiated Crime Prevention Urban Environment Implementation Plan Project
Related District Departments, Yongsan Police Station, Public Design Promotion Committee, and Project Company Attended
Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) held a kickoff briefing on the 26th of last month for the 'Yongsan-gu Crime Prevention Urban Environment Creation Implementation Plan and Guideline Establishment Project.'
Due to the need for establishing a basic crime prevention plan reflecting regional characteristics and cultural conditions, as well as implementing effective projects, the district has initiated a project for the first time to develop a plan in the field of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).
The briefing was attended by related district departments, Yongsan Police Station, the Public Design Promotion Committee, and representatives from the project company, who received reports on the project’s direction and execution plans and exchanged opinions on improvement measures.
In particular, the district plans to enhance the project’s completeness by establishing an organic work system with related institutions such as Yongsan Police Station and Yongsan Fire Station, and through expert consultation with professionals experienced in various CPTED projects.
Through this project, Yongsan-gu plans to implement phased projects from next year until 2028, targeting the entire district by reflecting regional characteristics and conditions such as crime occurrence status, population and housing types, multi-use facilities, and aging buildings, so that local residents can live safely from various crimes.
Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “This is a time when an urban environment for crime prevention is needed more than anything due to abnormal motivation crimes,” adding, “We will dedicate ourselves to safety so that anyone can live with peace of mind anytime and anywhere.”

Meanwhile, 'Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)' refers to a technique that designs urban environments in a way that prevents crime by suppressing criminal psychology and providing psychological stability to local residents.
Typical examples include placing walkways and playgrounds in open areas without obstacles to secure visibility, planting landscaping trees at a certain distance from buildings to prevent climbing and intrusion, and installing facilities such as CCTV, security lights, and convex mirrors in secluded or dark areas.
