Pohang City Visits Carbon Neutrality Leading Local Governments... Exploring Vision for Eco-Friendly Energy Transition
Jeju Energy Corporation and Electrolyzer Demonstration Complex, Offshore Wind Power Complex Visit Clean Energy Sites
Opportunity to Boost Pohang Clean Hydrogen Ecosystem Establishment and Designation as Distributed Energy Specialized Area
On the 30th and 31st, Pohang City visited clean energy project sites such as the hydrogen water electrolysis demonstration complex (a technology that decomposes water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity) and the Tamna offshore wind power complex operated by Jeju Energy Corporation to explore directions for eco-friendly energy transition.
On the 30th, Kim Nam-il, Vice Mayor of Pohang City, visited the Energy Future Hall of Jeju Energy Corporation.

Afterwards, they moved to the water electrolysis demonstration complex located in Haengwon-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju City, where they toured the site producing clean hydrogen by decomposing water using wind energy.
Jeju Island announced the 'Jeju Green Hydrogen Global Hub Establishment Plan' in September last year and is creating a green hydrogen demonstration complex by investing 22.2 billion KRW from October 2020 to April 2024 to build water electrolysis facilities, buffer tanks (hydrogen pressure buffer tanks), tube trailers, and more.
The green hydrogen produced at this water electrolysis demonstration complex (3.3 MW) is scheduled to be supplied to hydrogen buses within the region.
Jeju Island, abundant in renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, is considered an optimal location for green hydrogen production, and a large-scale green hydrogen production demonstration project of 12.5 MW is planned to proceed from April 2022 to March 2026.
On the 31st, the Pohang City delegation visited the Tamna Offshore Wind Power Plant, the first commercial offshore wind power plant (complex) in South Korea, to share information on operational status, future plans, and issues encountered during implementation.
The Tamna Offshore Wind Power Plant was constructed in September 2017 with investment and project management by Korea South-East Power Co., Ltd., and installation of ten 3 MW generators developed by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, producing 85,000 MWh of clean electricity annually, enough to supply 24,000 households.
Pohang City is actively promoting the creation of a hydrogen city centered on the recently pre-approved hydrogen fuel cell cluster, operating a hydrogen fuel cell certification center, fostering prospective hydrogen specialized companies, and preparing new projects such as blue-green hydrogen production demonstration to establish a full-cycle clean hydrogen ecosystem.

Vice Mayor Kim Nam-il stated, “Visiting Jeju, an excellent local government for carbon neutrality, provided a meaningful opportunity to discuss new industry policies and progress related to hydrogen and distributed energy,” and added, “Pohang City will continue efforts to revitalize distributed energy and the hydrogen industry, working together to establish a full-cycle clean hydrogen ecosystem early and to designate hydrogen-specialized complexes and distributed energy-specialized areas.”
