CJ CheilJedang's 'Gourmet Sobaba Chicken' Achieves 30 Billion KRW in Sales Six Months After Launch
Expected to Achieve 50 Billion KRW in Sales This Year
CJ CheilJedang announced on the 31st that 'Gourmet Sobaba Chicken' surpassed cumulative sales of 30 billion KRW (based on consumer price) within six months of its launch, and is expected to achieve approximately 50 billion KRW in sales this year. This is 2.7 times higher than the first six months' sales (11 billion KRW) of 'Bibigo Wang Gyoza,' a key player in the globalization of K-food.
The company cited the differentiated taste and quality that overcame the limitations of frozen chicken as the reasons for Gourmet Sobaba Chicken's popularity. Gourmet Sobaba Chicken features a crispiness as if freshly fried by applying CJ CheilJedang’s proprietary 'sauce coating' technology to chicken that is fried twice, just like in specialty restaurants. Additionally, the harmonious 'sweet and salty' flavor realized with a special soy sauce mixed with honey has received great consumer response since its release in April.
Furthermore, it is analyzed that the recent trend of increasing consumption of processed foods, including frozen chicken, evolving from side dishes to dining-out substitutes amid high inflation, also played a significant role.
CJ CheilJedang plans to secure global production bases for future overseas expansion. Building on the domestic success of Gourmet Sobaba Chicken, the company intends to designate the chicken category, one of the Global Strategic Products (GSP), as the next-generation K-food following dumplings, and focus on its development.
