Jeju Coast Guard Conducts Coastal Area Safety Monitoring Using Drones

Jeju Coast Guard Station (Chief So Byung-yong) announced on the 26th that it will conduct coastal area safety monitoring using drones in collaboration with Jeju Provincial Government for about a month from the 26th until next month.

This safety monitoring was initiated to prevent frequent accidents involving anglers and other visitors in blind spots of coastal areas such as tetrapods and rocky shores during the autumn season.

To expand the patrol monitoring and safety management scope of coastal areas by the police substation, drones will be used in connection with the ‘Coastal Area Safety Monitoring Pilot Project,’ part of Jeju Provincial Government’s drone special zone project. Except for drone no-fly zones within the jurisdiction of Jeju Coast Guard Station, various coastal areas will be monitored.

Drones provide a comprehensive view of areas difficult for police officers to patrol, such as tetrapods and rocky shores, enabling effective response to the safety management of anglers and other visitors.

Starting from the tetrapods at Hallim Port this morning, Jeju Coast Guard and Jeju Provincial Government will monitor coastal areas under their jurisdiction via drones, including Gosan Saengigijeong, Gueom-ri coastal cliffs, and Hamdeok Seoubong. Police officers will immediately respond to any safety issues or illegal activities involving visitors discovered during monitoring.

Chief So Byung-yong said, “To ensure accident-free coastal areas, we will introduce various innovative methods beyond drones and actively conduct coastal safety management in cooperation with related organizations and local residents across diverse fields.”
