Seoul National University President "Admission cancellation in progress"
Seoul National University announced that it will reclaim the scholarship of 8.02 million won that was paid after completing the procedure to cancel the admission of Cho Min, the daughter of former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk, to the Graduate School of Environmental Studies.
On the 24th, at the National Assembly Education Committee’s audit, Yoo Hong-rim, president of Seoul National University, stated this in response to a question from Jeong Gyeong-hee, a member of the People Power Party, who pointed out that the decision to cancel Cho’s admission to the Graduate School of Environmental Studies and the scholarship recovery were delayed. Rep. Jeong said, "The Gwanakhoe, a scholarship foundation under the Seoul National University Alumni Association, paid Cho 4.01 million won before she even enrolled at Seoul National University, and for the second semester of 2014, she submitted a leave of absence but still received another 4.01 million won scholarship," adding, "Isn't this a 'blind scholarship' at this point?"
She continued, "Cho received an unusual amount more than three times that of other scholarship students, but professors at the Graduate School of Environmental Studies unanimously say they never recommended her," and said, "Seoul National University must cancel Cho’s admission and reclaim the scholarship, and at the same time thoroughly investigate who was involved in the payment of the 2014 Gwanakhoe scholarship."
In response, President Yoo said, "Once the admission cancellation procedure is finalized, we will notify the Gwanakhoe of this fact and then request the procedures you mentioned."
Regarding the delay in Cho’s admission cancellation procedure, he explained, "We requested the official document regarding the academic status processing result from Korea University, and since Cho Min’s confirmation and consent are required, we are currently awaiting that."
After the Supreme Court confirmed the guilt of former Dongyang University professor Jeong Gyeong-sim in January last year, Cho filed and then withdrew a lawsuit challenging the cancellation of her admission at Pusan National University School of Medicine and Korea University. It became controversial when it was revealed that Seoul National University’s Graduate School of Environmental Studies kept Cho in a 'non-registered expelled' status while maintaining her graduate school acceptance.
