Dongshin University Student Donates 500,000 Won from Hanggun Scholarship to School Development Fund Draws Attention
Kwon Hojin, Freshman in Military Science Department
Ho-jin Kwon (19), a first-year student in the Department of Military Science at Dongshin University, is drawing attention by donating the 500,000 KRW scholarship he received from the Hyanggun Scholarship Foundation to the department development fund.
According to Dongshin University on the 23rd, Kwon has nurtured his dream of becoming a soldier while growing up listening to stories about the military from his father, a former military officer, and his maternal grandfather, a Vietnam War veteran.
To achieve his dream, he enrolled in the Department of Military Science at Dongshin University this March and passed the final Army ROTC officer exam last August, less than a year after enrollment.
Recognized for his outstanding academic achievements and active participation in security activities, he was selected as a Hyanggun scholarship student at the 71st Armed Forces Veterans Day and Security Resolution Meeting held at the Gwangju Security Hall on the 20th.
Kwon donated the 500,000 KRW scholarship he received, saying, "I will continue the relay donation tradition of my seniors," by contributing it to the department development fund.
Graduates of the Department of Military Science at Dongshin University have a tradition of donating scholarships to juniors using their first salary after commissioning as second lieutenants or allowances collected during overseas deployments. This is the first time a current student, not a graduate, has donated a scholarship.
Kwon said, "I will inherit the good intentions of my seniors and become a soldier who can contribute not only to the department but also to places in need."
Meanwhile, since its establishment in 2014, the Department of Military Science at Dongshin University has maintained a 100% pass rate for officer exams, with all graduates from the first to the sixth class in 2018, as well as current students from first to fourth year, passing the exams.
