Thai Woman Returning Home to Attend Dying Relative
"Help the People There," Decides After Mother's Words
A 'Thai woman' who rescued about 90 of her compatriots trapped in the combat zone in Israel is attracting attention from netizens. The protagonist of the story is Wipawadi Bannachai, who runs a law office in Israel and saved Thai workers caught in trouble due to the attack by the Palestinian armed faction 'Hamas'.
According to local Thai media such as the 'Bangkok Post' on the 19th (local time), Wipawadi drove into the combat zone with her friend Nippapon Sohasen as soon as the Hamas attack began.
The Israeli military tried to stop Wipawadi from entering the dangerous area, but she eventually persuaded the military and was able to rescue the workers. It is reported that about 90 Thai workers, including the injured, were trapped in the combat zone during Hamas's attack.
There are many foreign workers from Thailand residing in Israel. About 30,000 Thais live there, including in collective farms. Among them, about 5,000 worked near the Gaza Strip, the combat zone.
They were unable to escape in time due to the sudden start of the terror attack. Bunhom Butmon, a Thai who was reunited with her son who safely escaped the combat zone with the help of Wipawadi and her friend, told the media, "My son, who was shot in the leg, and others were able to return home safely," and expressed gratitude, saying, "Wipawadi is a hero."
Wipawadi has been running a law office in the area for 15 years with her Israeli ex-husband, who is a lawyer. She has handled legal issues of Thai workers residing and working in Israel.
Meanwhile, it is reported that Wipawadi missed her mother's deathbed because she stayed in Israel to help her compatriots escape. At the time of Hamas's terror attack, Wipawadi's mother was battling terminal cancer, and Wipawadi was originally planning to return home to be with her mother in her final moments.
However, Wipawadi's mother sent a message saying, "I am having a hard time living, so stay in Israel and help the Thais who need your help," and Wipawadi decided to remain in Israel.
Wipawadi returned to Thailand on the 17th after the situation settled down. She plans to stay in Thailand until December to attend her mother's funeral and then return to Israel.
