Yisang-il, Mayor of Yongin, "Doing Our Best to Complete Giheung Interchange Improvement Without Delay"
Willingness to Resolve Congestion Issues Caused by Logistics Center Vehicles
Expectations to Alleviate Chronic Traffic Jams Around Giheung Nadeulmok Upon December Completion
On the 17th, Lee Sang-il, mayor of Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, visited the construction site of the Gyeongbu Expressway Giheung Interchange improvement project in Gomae-dong, Giheung-gu, to inspect the progress, the city announced on the 18th.

The Giheung Interchange improvement project aims to alleviate severe traffic congestion around the rotary in front of the interchange. Construction began in July 2020 and is underway with the goal of completion by the end of this year. Once the improvement is completed, vehicles exiting the expressway will be able to directly head toward Seoul or Dongtan 2 New Town instead of using the rotary in front of the old Giheung tollgate. The existing rotary section will be converted into a cross-shaped general intersection.
Currently, among the entire construction, the ramp section connecting the southbound lane (toward Busan) of the Gyeongbu Expressway to Dongtan 2 New Town opened in March, and in April, the ramp section connecting Dongtan 2 New Town and Gomae-dong, Giheung-gu, Yongin to the northbound lane (toward Seoul) was also completed. The remaining construction sections are the southbound ramp toward Gomae-dong and the ramp connecting the Giheung complex to the northbound lane.
However, during this site inspection, concerns were raised that despite the improvement works, congestion might occur due to the mingling of vehicles using the interchange and vehicles entering and exiting the nearby large-scale courier logistics center. Currently, the Korea Expressway Corporation is in discussions with companies operating logistics bases around the interchange to resolve this issue but has yet to find a solution.
During the inspection, Mayor Lee also called related companies to request cooperation in resolving the access road issues connected to the nearby courier logistics center. He stated, "Once the construction is completed, there is a risk of congestion caused by the mingling of vehicles using the interchange and those traveling to and from the courier logistics center. It is necessary for companies, the Korea Expressway Corporation, and Yongin City to discuss this in advance and find a solution."
