Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok: "We Will Fully Commit to Establishing a National Medical School in Jeonnam"
With the government's announcement on the medical school quota plan imminent, Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, announced that he will make every effort to respond together with the local community.
Governor Kim said on the 17th, "The increase in quota can be seen as including the establishment of new medical schools in detail," and added, "We will make every effort with the local community to establish a national medical school in Jeonnam."
Governor Kim Young-rok emphasized, "I requested the Deputy Minister of Education (who attended the opening ceremony of the National Sports Festival) to establish medical schools in Jeonnam and Gyeongbuk provinces, as there are many difficulties due to the absence of medical schools in these areas."
He continued, "The Deputy Minister said, 'I fully understand,' and did not express any negative remarks, so I have high expectations," adding, "However, since the Deputy Minister of Education does not control everything, I hope that not only Jeonnam Province but also local lawmakers, civic groups, and the media will strongly express public opinion in favor of establishing medical schools."
Regarding the Gwangju Research Institute's public opinion survey results showing that over 40% of respondents in Muan support the relocation of the military airport, he evaluated it as a "meaningful change."
Governor Kim urged Gwangju City to make a prompt decision, saying, "The issue of relocating the Gwangju military airport can be resolved more easily if Gwangju City quickly responds to the simultaneous relocation of both the civilian and military airports."
He also stated, "I will have a dialogue with Muan County at an appropriate time," and expressed, "We will successfully conduct the urgent National Sports Festival, resolve hot issues such as the establishment of a national medical school, and continuously pay attention to and strive for the revitalization of Muan International Airport."
Regarding the Gwangju-Yeongam Autobahn, he revealed, "When I proposed its inclusion in the national plan, the President expressed interest, saying, 'Could the F1 racetrack serve as a testbed for the era of AI autonomous vehicles?' and said, 'I will take good care of it.'"
About the Suncheonman National Garden Expo, he explained, "The President's attendance at the opening ceremony greatly helped promotion, and when I reported that the number of visitors surpassed 8 million, he was surprised," adding, "Regarding the animation planned as a post-expo project, he said he instructed the minister to provide direct support."
He also said, "The opening ceremony of the National Sports Festival incorporated Jeolla-do traditional culture and was successfully held as a world-class event with a drone show featuring 500 drones. The President and First Lady also praised it, saying 'Well done,'" and added, "The overseas Korean athletes' delegation expressed satisfaction, saying this festival was more thoughtfully considerate than any previous event."
