The forum was co-hosted by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in New York and The Korea Society. About 100 participants attended, including officials from government and public investment institutions, private financial institutions, and local Korean students in New York.
The presentation was given by Shin Soon-gyu, the world's first visually impaired Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a director at Brown Brothers Harriman (BBH), on the theme of 'Living a Balanced Life in a Capitalist Society.' Shin is a veteran finance professional with 29 years of experience as an analyst at JP Morgan and BBH. He is also the founder of YANA, a nonprofit organization that helps children in orphanages. He lost his sight at age 9 and came to the United States alone at 15, after which he worked for over 30 years as a Wall Street analyst.
Shin said, "We live in an era where balance is needed in various aspects such as individuals and organizations, academics and activities, work and leisure, religion and secularism," adding, "It is especially important to harmoniously embody the spirit of profit-seeking in capitalism with dignity, mutual respect, and sharing." He continued, "It is impossible to achieve perfect balance in life. The key is to avoid extremes," citing his own life as an analyst who also continues charitable activities. He added, "In investing, one should not be fixated on either value or growth. It is rational to invest in companies that combine both aspects."
