On the 5th, the women's compound archery team, consisting of Oh Yuhyun (34, Jeonbuk Provincial Office), So Chaewon (26, Hyundai Mobis), and Jo Sua (22, Hyundai Mobis), defeated Indonesia 232-229 in the bronze medal match held that day to secure the bronze medal.
Since compound archery was added as an official event at the 2014 Incheon Games, South Korea had never missed a gold medal in the women's team event, but this time, the team failed to advance to the final, ending their bid for a third consecutive gold.
Oh Yuhyun, the eldest member of the compound team, originally started as a recurve archer but switched to compound archery after considering retirement due to a shoulder injury. Compound archery, which is unfamiliar to the public, uses a pulley system that allows the bow to be drawn with less force than recurve, reducing the burden on the shoulder.
Unlike recurve archery, which is played in a set system, compound archery uses cumulative scoring to determine the winner. Each team of three players shoots 8 arrows each, totaling 24 arrows. The match is conducted over 4 ends, with 6 arrows shot per end.
So Chaewon won a gold medal in the women's team event and a silver medal in the mixed team event at the Jakarta-Palembang Games five years ago. She added two more medals at this Hangzhou Games. Earlier on the 4th, she won a silver medal in the mixed team event with Joo Jaehoon (Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power), and on this day, she added a bronze in the women's team event.
So Chaewon said, "It was very disappointing to lose in the semifinals against Taiwan, but since the bronze medal match was held immediately afterward, I couldn't just dwell on the disappointment. Yuhyun unnie also encouraged us by saying 'Let's do our best until the end,' so I was able to pull myself together and win the bronze."
She continued, "Still, I wanted to share the joy of the gold medal with Yuhyun unnie and Sua, and I feel sorry that I couldn't perform at my best," bowing her head.
With this additional team medal, So Chaewon became the South Korean compound archer with the most Asian Games medals. She has now secured her fifth medal.
This competition features a total of five medals in compound archery: men's and women's individual events, men's and women's team events, and mixed team event. So Chaewon, who ranked second overall in the qualifiers, qualified to compete in the individual, team, and mixed events.
