Diagnosis of Sleep Apnea with Samsung Galaxy Watch... "Obtained MFDS Approval"
Upgrade Scheduled for Early Next Year
Support for Galaxy Watch5 and Watch6
Samsung Electronics' 'Early Detection Support Function for Sleep Apnea,' developed using the Galaxy Watch series, recently received approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
The Galaxy Watch's 'Bio Active Sensor' measures blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) during sleep and analyzes patterns where the measured oxygen saturation values change due to apnea or hypopnea to estimate the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) during sleep.
However, to ensure data accuracy, users must wear the Galaxy Watch and sleep for more than 4 hours per day on two days within a ten-day period.
The early detection support function for sleep apnea is expected to be supported on the Galaxy Watch5 and Watch6 through an update to the 'Samsung Health Monitor' application early next year.
Professor Jeong Yong-gi of Samsung Medical Center explained, "It is estimated that there are approximately 1 to 2 million patients with obstructive sleep apnea in Korea, but about 75% of them have not received an accurate diagnosis. The early detection support function for sleep apnea will provide an opportunity to improve medical accessibility for sleep disorders."
