Gyeonggi-do Conducts Radiation Tests on Japanese Seafood... Over 20 Types Including Jeotgal and Eomuk
Gyeonggi Province will conduct radiation tests on imported Japanese processed seafood products.
Gyeonggi Province announced that from the 5th to the 13th of this month, it will collect and test imported Japanese processed seafood products such as salted seafood and fish cakes for radiation contamination.
This inspection follows the import ban on seafood from areas near the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in Japan, yet imports of processed seafood products from these regions continue.
The inspection targets about 20 types of imported Japanese processed seafood products, including salted seafood and fish cakes.
Gyeonggi Province plans to randomly collect products sold at large supermarkets and department stores within the province or those imported in bulk by distribution companies, and conduct radiation tests at the Gyeonggi Provincial Institute of Health and Environment.
The radiation testing standards will follow the standards and specifications for foods under the Food Sanitation Act, testing for cesium and iodine. If trace amounts are detected, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety will be notified, and if non-compliance exceeding 100 bq/kg is found, sales will be suspended and the products will be disposed of.
Meanwhile, regarding concerns over 'Japanese Fukushima radioactive contaminated water,' Gyeonggi Province conducts weekly radiation tests on distributed seafood at four private wholesale markets located in Hanam, Siheung, Hwaseong, and Gimpo, as well as four public wholesale markets located in Suwon, Ansan, Anyang, and Guri.
