[Asian Games] Hong Kong Men's Soccer Team Advances to Semifinals Despite Group Stage Losses
Hong Kong, which recorded two consecutive losses in the group stage of the men's football at the '2022 Hangzhou Asian Games,' advanced to the semifinals.
The men's football semifinal matchups have been set as South Korea vs. Uzbekistan and Japan vs. Hong Kong.
Ranked 148th in the FIFA world rankings, Hong Kong had not achieved notable results in previous Asian competitions. Hong Kong was placed in Group C along with Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Syria. However, Afghanistan and Syria suddenly withdrew, leaving only Uzbekistan and Hong Kong in Group C.
The organizing committee decided not to redraw the groups and proceeded with the matches by having Uzbekistan and Hong Kong face each other twice. In other groups, teams must finish in the top two out of four to advance to the round of 16. Since there were only two teams in Group C, both Uzbekistan and Hong Kong secured advancement to the round of 16 regardless of match results.
