Kim Dong-yeon's Climate Response 'RE100' Attracts Interest in US and China... Achieving 30% Renewable Energy by 2030

On the 27th, Gyeonggi Province announced that Kang Geum-sil, the province’s climate ambassador, attended the New York Climate Week event in the U.S. and the World Coastal Forum in China consecutively, introducing the ‘Gyeonggi RE100’ policy promoted by Gyeonggi Province and emphasizing the role of local governments.
On the 25th, Climate Ambassador Kang attended the World Coastal Forum held in Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, China, where she discussed climate change, coastal ecosystems, and wetland conservation under the theme of ‘Green and Low-Carbon Development of Our Coasts.’
At the event, Ambassador Kang stated, "Since Gyeonggi Province and Yancheng City share the same sea, we hope to establish an international cooperation system in the field of coastal ecosystems," proposing cooperation on current issues such as RE100.
Earlier, on the 17th, Ambassador Kang represented Gyeonggi Province at the ‘2023 New York Climate Week Opening Ceremony’ held in New York, USA.
Ambassador Kang met with Helen Clarkson, CEO of The Climate Group, the organizer of New York Climate Week, and explained, "As the first metropolitan local government, Gyeonggi Province presents the ‘Gyeonggi RE100 Vision’ to its residents, aiming to turn today’s climate crisis into tomorrow’s growth opportunity, and is making multifaceted efforts to achieve a 30% share of renewable energy by 2030."
On the following day, the 18th, Ambassador Kang attended a meeting of senior local government and energy transition officials invited by The Climate Group, and on the 19th, she participated in the ‘Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance (BOGA)’ meeting, where she discussed the cessation of fossil fuel use and the transition to renewable energy leadership among local governments with former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, Washington State Governor Jay Inslee, Quebec Premier Francois Legault, and others.
At the meeting, Ambassador Kang emphasized, "The role of local governments in setting directions for energy policy is important, and Gyeonggi Province is playing a leading role in expanding renewable energy by converting 100% of the electricity used by the province and its 28 affiliated public institutions to renewable energy by 2026 through public institution RE100."
New York Climate Week (Climate Week NYC) has been held annually since 2009 alongside the United Nations General Assembly, gathering leaders from governments, businesses, and civil society organizations worldwide in New York to carry out various climate actions.

Kang Geum-sil, former 55th Minister of Justice and current representative lawyer of Law Firm One, was appointed as Gyeonggi Province’s climate ambassador in April. She plays a role in advising on the province’s carbon neutrality policies and promoting Gyeonggi’s climate policies by attending major overseas climate conferences.
